<image:caption>October 2022 Casta is a bilingual hybrid performance inspired by a series of casta paintings by Miguel Cabrera, a mixed-race painter from Oaxaca. Casta paintings were a unique form of portraiture that grew in popularity over the 18th century in Nueva España that depicted different racial mixtures arranged according to a hierarchy defined by Spanish elites. The plot follows a lowly apprentice who is commissioned to paint a casta series for a wealthy patron. As he attempts to conform his work to the set hierarchy, the images revolt and instead illuminate a complex portrait of fluid Latinx identities.</image:caption>

It will be performed by an ensemble of actors who represent the many histories of Texas. Public Property: that’s what a park technically is. But everyone who spends time at the park has their own individual story of that place, a belief that this land belongs to them. Well, I think we should talk about this shit!” In an effort to keep the world from losing its grip on humanity and stewing in a place where we no longer seek to understand The Other, Silva invites us to get our poop in a group and explore our shit stories. <image:caption>MARCH 2019 A contemporary translation of the classic Greek drama that asks, “How do we care for the dead and how we do grieve amidst crisis?” Antigonick is strangely reimagined by the inimitable Classics scholar and award-winning poet, Anne Carson. Directed by Salvage Vanguard’s co-producing Artistic Director Diana Lynn Small, Antigonick stretches the boundaries of story in poetry and theater. Antigonick asks, “What can one woman do in the face of unjust laws?” What is she willing to sacrifice? In this time worn story, Carson points to the lessons we’re meant to learn from our past, yet somehow fail to remember. <image:caption>OCTOBER 2018 A World Premier Production from Adara Meyers, a Boston-based experimental playwright, Tryouts casts a satirical gaze on women, femininity, and motherhood, inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s “The Virgin and Child with St. Anne,” and Freud’s debunked maternal psychosexual essay on the painting. Two mothers and three teenage girls maneuver the confines of a prestigious and draconian high school when in a tragicomic turn of events, the mothers throw themselves into the work of forming a pseudo-religious order focused on topiary and the girls confront head-on the primly grim version of adulthood they’ve been taught all too well. Original music composed by Graham Reynolds, who will perform live July 22nd and 23rd. GUEST BY COURTESY portrays the mangled story of a pair of cousins waging their bizarre relationship over the course of a failing afternoon tea. <image:caption>March 2016 In 2013 directors Ida Daniel and Jenny Larson and composers Todor Stoyanov and Graham Reynolds met during the mini-festival She Makes Theatre in Sofia, Bulgaria. Unlived Lives is the continuation of this initial encounter. Their artistic residency began in Sofia, Bulgaria in June of 2015. The four artists worked for 10 days and then shared a performance at the Mozei on June 9th and 10th. The experiment continues with this Texas residency. Beginning in Marfa, TX on March 23rd 2016 the piece will move to Salvage Vanguard Theater for a public performance on April 2nd. There, under the title Unlived Lives, the audience will witness the result of the joint experience of the directors and the composers. Unlived Lives is an encounter of people working in a similar artistic field in different spots of the world. During the process Jenny Larson, Ida Daniel, Graham Reynolds and Todor Stoyanov will explore what we take for granted in life on both sides of the Ocean. The work will examine the differences in the life we live and the life that we haven’t lived (yet or never). The creative team will devise a performance over the course of ten days. Pre-dawn, on the 11th day, the artists will share the work with an audience. The performance on April 2nd takes place from 2am- 5am (come and go as you please) in an attempt to challenge the way one compartmentalizes ones life and to challenge these understandings of the borders we create between work and fun, wake and sleep, lived and unlived lives. <image:caption>September 2015 In the eighth grade, playwright and performer Jay Byrd was a bit of a "sissy," but he was also a good Christian boy, the son of a Fundamentalist preacher. And he shared a family secret with his closeted gay uncle. When the popular kids in junior high dubbed him Gaybird, he felt ashamed and embarrassed… and curious about how those kids might have figured it out. Naked as a Gaybird is Jay Byrd’s journey through a life of discovery, of hiding in closets, of learning about the body functions of boys and beasts, of sex and shame and naïveté, and of a pivotal moment in life when he was forced to look in the mirror and admit things to himself honestly. A hilarious one man show, Naked as a Gaybird is told through childlike animation, object puppetry, and conversations—like a tale told around a campfire to a new close friend after a couple of beers, with a song thrown in here and there for good measure. Jay Byrd bares his soul (and his ass) and reclaims the “Gaybird” as an important, fabulous part of the heroic survivor who lives inside him. <image:caption>January 2015 Three Zisters is an amalgamation of a modern adaption of Chekhov's Three Sisters, a literal translation of the original Russian text, and dramatic criticism of Chekhov's work. The piece explores the innate conflict between performing classic texts and the changing roles of gender and performance in contemporary culture. Oh, and the sisters are zombies. The synopsis: The three sisters have long been dead and buried. Vershinin, Tusenbach, and Suleny exhume them with the hopes of creating the perfect women for their pleasure. The sisters, unburied and ready to adapt to a new way of life, learn that there are already very stringent expectations in place for their arrivals. THR3E ZISTER’s Austin-based cast includes Heather Hanna, Jenny Larson, and Caroline Reck as the zombie sisters, and Jay Byrd, Zac Crofford, Robert Matney, and Noel Gaulin. <image:caption>October 2014 When Neo-Nazi terrorist Wesley Connor returns to prison after a failed bomb plot, he is confronted with the two identities that threaten his position within the White Order of Thule most: fatherhood and his own mixed race heritage. Wesley Connor first entered the prison system at age 19. He became a member of the White Order of Thule, quickly rising the ranks of the "esoteric brotherhood working toward the revitalization of the Culture-Soul of the European people." Within months of his release from prison, Wesley and teenage girlfriend Polly were arrested exchanging counterfeit bills at an ice cream shop. The subsequent search of their apartment found bomb-making materials, illegal weapons and plans that targeted the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC. Inspired by the true story of Leo Felton and Erica Chase, AM I WHITE travels between recurring dream and minstrel show nightmare to discover if a singular self exists in an alleged “post-racial” America. AM I WHITE’s extraordinary cast includes J. Ben Wolfe* (in the lead role of Wesley Connor), Florinda Bryant, Michael Joplin, Cyndi Williams and Katie Van Winkle. The award-winning design team includes Ia Enstera , Natalie George, Jessica Gilzow, Lowell Bartholomee, with original music/sound design by Peter Stopschinski.</image:caption>

<image:caption>June 2014 We are at a crossroads in the Land of Oz. Twilight. A boy named Tip receives a mysterious prophecy from a dying Queen. Tip’s resulting adventure into the unknown is the heart of Bright Now Beyond, a new music theatre piece by Daniel Alexander Jones and composer Bobby Halvorson, presented by Salvage Vanguard Theater. Set decades after the events of The Wizard of Oz, this Oz has lost its luster, and faces hardships brought by drought and disillusionment. Bright Now Beyond draws loosely upon L. Frank Baum’s second book in the series, The Marvelous Land of Oz. A pumpkin-headed man and a wooden sawhorse are brought to life by a magical powder. General Jinjur leads a bodacious girl army to the Emerald City in revolt against the dusty Scarecrow King. The Tin Woodsman sharpens his axe and prepares to join the battle. Throughout it all, Glinda, the legendary witch, searches for a lost bit of knowledge to turn a swelling tide, as Mombi, a malevolent sorceress, races to find Tip before he learns a secret so powerful it could change the Land of Oz forever! By turns hilarious and poignant, Bright Now Beyond is one part trunk-show and one part ritual of remembrance. The piece explores what might lie beyond the edges of the self and invites us to let go of what we know in order to move down a new path. As the Scarecrow says, “the journey is the only true thing.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>April 2014 An interactive journey across a vast landscape of associate histories, FROM THE PIG PILE features original music, puppetry, dancing, marauding, a Yeahoh sighting and enough champagne for everyone. For three (hundred thousand) years now, we of the Pig Pile have squirmed, squealed and de-structed our way across a vast landscape of associative histories. At times, they morph together into a narrative structure, and at others, they elude us completely. There is no panacea for feral swine work. The closer we get to the complicated porcine truth of what it means to be human, the more our numbers have dwindled, and we are now on the brink of extinction. Only you can help us to piece these pieces together, before it’s too late. <image:caption>April 2013 Come ye. Come ye and observe this sorry entry into that hopeful realm of female comedy. In the deeply pro-feminist setting of a masonic hallway, Hannah Kenah and Jenny Larson stage a two-women, one-man, two-arms, one couch, imaginary props, terrible miming, genre-bending, era-bending, woman-bashing, man-worshipping show that plumbs the depths of desperation and duration. Guest by Courtesy pretends to answer the question, what the fuck should a girl do with all her spare time, and decisively proves that women are not sane. Two cousins – one poor and single, one rich and married – wage their bizarre relationship over the course of a failing afternoon tea. The work was developed by Jenny Larson, artistic director of Salvage Vanguard Theater, and Hannah Kenah, company member, performer and writer for the Rude Mechs, and scored by Graham Reynolds, Austin’s best-loved composer of all things brilliant. Come and see them not know what kind of show they are making. A dance show? A clown show? A play? Discover how much you can tolerate. Etiquette and sanity separate the Haves from the Have Nots. Guest by Courtesy is the story of two cousins. One is married, wealthy, and fancy; the other is single, poor, and drab. We find these cousins waging their bizarre relationship over the course of a failing tea party. They are not anchored in time, in space, or even in age. The cousins are little girls, society women, bitter rivals, and friends. Shuttling between high physicality, archetypal characters, and sheer vulgarity, Guest by Courtesypossesses some kinship with theatrical clowning – portraying simple characters who possess love and heartbreak beyond their own comprehension. <image:caption>February 2011 Like any well-made play, this one starts with a booming voice from the sky – though this booming voice arrives in the form of a hardcover copy of Hedda Gabler torpedoing into the lap of a terribly bored Michigan housewife. Suddenly, Jane Gordon finds herself captured by robots and whisked off to the Ecuadorian rainforest to perform the titular role in a robo-version of Henrik Ibsen’s famous drama. Jane’s ten-year-old daughter, Nugget, with the aid of her milquetoast father, an eager documentary filmmaker and her small arms dealing uncle must rescue her mother from the mechanical grip of her robot captors - whether she wants to be saved or not. Heddatron takes us on a hi(tech)storical journey through our trigger happy-TV-4G-machine-obsessed world to ask that great question, “What does it mean to be human?” Salvage Vanguard Theatre, with the help of the University of Texas’ tech-savvy IEEE Robotics & Automation Society, is ecstatic to offer a look at what happens when “real” robots and ever realer humans battle it out on the stage in the Austin premiere of Elizabeth Meriwether’s genre-defying head-trip Heddatron. Margraff’s nostalgic nuclear winter Xmas opera The Cry Pitch Carrolls, featuring original live music by Golden Arm Trio. Strange and beautiful, The Cry Pitch Carrolls tells the story of a young mother and her infant child, a town of widows where it never stops snowing, and a lost poodle named Snowball.</image:caption>

In this world premiere production, Lillian Davis, a sophisticated metropolitan housewife, weaves magic spells to shelter herself from the inevitable: a highrise building that will ultimagely block her impeccable view; and a fairy-tale beast who is hopelessly in love with her. Written as only Lisa D’Amour could imagine it, 16 Spells to Charm the Beast takes us through Lillian’s sheltered life and her greatest fear—the vulnerability of true love. The all-star cast features Harvey Guion, Monika Bustamente, David Jones, and Lana Dieterich as Lillian Davis.</image:caption>

<image:caption>October 2003 SCORE BY GRAHAM REYNOLDS LIBRETTO BY KAREN HARTMAN DIRECTED BY JASON NEULANDER It all started in 1999, with SVT’s and Golden Arm Trio’s first collaboration, Ruth Margraff’s Cry Pitch Carrolls. That production, a new chamber opera, met with enormous critical acclaim. Then, Golden Arm Trio performed its first symphony and immediately after the performance, Jason Neulander (SVT’s Artistic Director) approached Graham Reynolds (GAT’s head honcho) to ask if he wanted to create a composer-driven opera. Karen Hartman joined up as the librettist. Two-and-a-half years later, the fruits of that effort were available to the public in the form of MotherBone! MotherBone is a contemporary retelling of a classic Russian folk story. Val’s mom dies and her father abandons her, making her a child of the streets. Val is bent on revenge and seeks the fire of a legendary witch who lives across the canal. Fully sung through, with a cast of 14, an orchestra of 10, huge sets and costumes, and seventeen hundred pounds of dry ice, MotherBone is full-scale opera as only Salvage Vanguard Theater and Golden Arm Trio could create it.</image:caption>

Downcast Mary is a young woman grown brick-tough from run-ins with the law. Troubled John is a dreamer who cobbles together worlds in his mind to escape to when his frail body buckles. Together, these two drifters make their way across a patchwork America, scraping together food, shelter, and a path to redemption. Gritty and sweet, terrifying and uplifting, Fugitive Pieces offers a fractured glimpse into the underbelly of America. The designers include set by Stephen Pruitt (Requiem for Tesla), lighting by Diana Duecker (Wallpaper Psalm and Tilt Angel), and costumes by Meredith Moseley (Tilt Angel). Tilt Angel was an extraordinary success for Salvage Vanguard Theater. Hailed as a “must-see” production by The Austin American-Statesman, the show blew all previous attendance records out of the water. More than 1100 people saw the show. In addition, the play brought in record box office revenues and record merchandise sales. And with Tilt Angel, Salvage Vanguard Theater surpassed the 2-ton mark of canned food donated to the Capitol Area Food Bank through “Starving Artist Nite.” The script received a workshop and reading at PlayLabs in Minneapolis and a reading at Rude Mechanicals in New York. Tilt Angel was featured on both the Statesman and Austin Chronicle“Top 10” lists for 2001. Playwright Dan Dietz spins a gothic fairy tale, deep south style. After her commercial flight crashes into the earth, a dead woman, her auto mechanic husband, and their baby-brained, big-bodied son struggle to get the world back on its axis. Sparks and steel, threatening vegetables, weird wings and weirder hands all collide in this gritty and lyrical family epic. Replete with live sound effects and original music, the show captured the imagination of more than 250 people in its live performance. But the live performance was only the beginning. The company digitally recorded the production with the goal of airing it on the radio and, in December 2000, released the CD for broadcast and for sale on its web site. The response to The Intergalactic Nemesis by the audience was wildly enthusiastic. The Austin Chronicle had this to say: “Participation in the live taping of a radio show is … historic. We happy few will have the backstory when the tapes come out, and we alone will know how Moran and Co. made those squishy Martian sounds.”</image:caption>

Conceived by Neulander in 1998 and funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the show integrated its experimental process with source material from The Possessed by Fyodor Dostoevsky and news reports of the shootings at Columbine High School. Because of its experimental nature, the creative process was extremely challenging and exhausting, but the results paid off. People were deeply affected by the emotional and visual power of the show, some positively and some negatively, but all quite strongly.</image:caption>

Originally produced in New York, this production featured new staging, a new set, and original music by Austin’s own Golden Arm Trio. Billed as a “nostalgic nuclear winter Christmas opera”, the production was quite simply the most critically acclaimed production in Salvage Vanguard’s history. Not only did the all the reviews indicate a high level of artistic achievement (“Riveting… magical… only once in a very long while have we seen anything this mesmerizingly original.” –Austin American-Statesman), but the show received ”Top Ten” mention by three Austin critics at the end of 1999. The Austin Chronicle’s summation may have said it best: “Nothing less than a small miracle. Ruth Margraff’s lyrical tale of loss and renewal—remarkable by itself—might not have connected as it did had it not been for the jewel of a production lovingly crafted around it by director Jason Neulander and company. Graham Reynolds’ emotionally rich score, the enchanting picture-window setting, and the deeply felt performances spirited me to a new home of snow, widows, and wonder.”</image:caption>

Arguably the most ambitious project the company has even taken on, Venus ran for four weeks under a circus tent at 5th and Lamar right in downtown Austin! The company had to create the venue from scratch, and while a rental company erected the tent itself, the production team installed electricity, the dressing rooms, rented port-o-potties, built risers, loaded in a two-story set, and even laid out hay on the ground to create an authentic circus feel. The production drew the second-highest attendance in the company’s history and was critically acclaimed by the press. The Austin American-Statesman called it “the most artful show of the year” and The Austin Chronicle said: “Neulander’s production goes like gangbusters… full of variety and frolic, as a tight ensemble portrays dozens of characters, racing through demanding costume changes and style shifts, and generally entertaining the hell out of the audience, all under that big top.”</image:caption>
