SALVAGE VANGUARD THEATER'S FULL FEBRUARY
(Austin, TX)- Salvage Vanguard Theater (2803 Manor Rd.) is completely packed for the month of February. Practically every day of the month has an event—ranging from an art opening to a Power Point Slam-- being held at SVT's new venue.
"It's incredibly exciting to know that our venue—in the short amount of time that it's been open—has so quickly become known in the city that we're able to book it for practically every day this month," says SVT's Programming Director Shannon McCormick.
On the main stage from February 1st through the 9th is Cambiare Productions's performance piece Transformations. Transformations is based on the poetry of Anne Sexton and explores the existing and perceived roles of women in society. A blend of film, dance and theater, this performance piece features the work of independent recording artist Terami Hirsch, actress Amy Kersten, dancer/choreographer Janna Rock, composer Kim Bird, director Amy Hopper (of Houston's Nova Arts Project), film director Julia Shackleford, and contributions from recording artist Noe Venable.
Salvage Vanguard's Gallery will hold a reception for the opening of 01.08 Works with art by Benne Rockett and Suzann Dulaney On February 7th at 6pm. This installation explores the narratives in individuals stories and their unknown ends. "There is no clear window into the inner life of a person, for any window is always filtered through the glaze of language, signs and the process of signification. And language, in its written and verbal forms, is always inherently unstable, in flux, and made up of the traces of other signs and symbolic statements," writes Melissa Ladd, SVT's Gallery Manager.
Austin Shakespeare Artistic Director, Ann Ciccolella will lead a Shakespeare Acting Studio every Monday through March 17th. Participants will focus on sharpening their classical acting tools as well as participate in an hourly movement session with specialist Jim Hancock.
Power Point Slam 4 lifts the format of competitive slam poetry and gives it to the Power Point fiends of our city. On February 13th at 8PM, they compete to see who can give the best Power Point presentation on the topic of their choice. Animated transitions and perfect slide are only a few of the moments to look forward to.
The first installment of SVT Reads! series will be presented on February 16th. A public reading of That Pretty, Pretty or The Rape Play by Sheila Callaghan will feature Liz Fisher, Andrew Varenhorst, and Halena Kays. The SVT Reads! Series takes a work in progress and gives it a two week rehearsal and development treatment with a director and dramaturg. This installment is directed by Aaron Sanders with dramaturgy by Colin D. Swanson.
Church of The Friendly Ghost will sponsor a benefit performance on February 23rd for KOOP Radio to aid in the rebuilding process for the independent radio station. Featured artists include Rick Reed, Thomas Fang, Sara Norris, Travis Weller, Alex Keller and Nick Hennies. For more information, visit http://www.myspace.com/churchofthefriendlyghost.
SVT's sponsored project Gnap! Theater will help celebrate the opening of Merlin Works Institute for Improvisation on February 22nd at 8pm with live improv from Get Up! and friends. Drinking, dancing and drama are guaranteed as a new institute is ushered into our fair city and opens its doors to those who wish to intelligently make it up as they go. For more information visit http://gnapmerlinlaunch.eventbrite.com.
And wrapping up the final week of February is one of Austin's newest companies presenting Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
Non-public events fill up the remainder of the calendar, including a class for Whole Foods, an SVT Donor Event and private improv workshops with Tom Booker.
"What's exciting is that as soon as our second stage is completed, we'll be even more booked for the coming season," exclaims McCormick.
Salvage Vanguard Theater houses a main stage 100+ seat theater, a gallery space and will soon house a 50+ seat second stage. For more information about Salvage Vanguard Theater, visit http://www.salvagevanguard.org or contact Programming Director Shannon McCormick at shannon@salvagevanguard.org.
