Salvage Vanguard Leadership to Travel in May
AUSTIN, TX--Salvage Vanguard Theater's co-Artistic Directors are working around the country in May. Dan Dietz will be developing a new script at Annex Theatre in Seattle and Jason Neulander will be directing a reading at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York.
Dan Dietz is one of four playwrights this year to be invited to participate in "HotHouse", a play development lab supported by Annex Theatre in Seattle. Dietz will be flown up to Seattle where he will spend 2 weeks developing a brand new play, which will then be presented as a work-in-progress to the community. "It's a really exciting opportunity," says Dietz. "I mean, how often do you get a 2 weeks vacation to write? Plus, they really want the script to be entirely new--not something you're already working on. So it's kind of like jumping off a cliff with about eleven days to grow a pair of wings. Pretty cool." Past participants in the lab include Salvage Vanguard veteran David Bucci, whose HotHouse-developed play Andromeda Shack premiered last month at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. The 2001 HotHouse lab runs May 12 - 27.
Jason Neulander has been invited by the Jospeh Papp Public Theater in New York to direct a reading of The Clouds, The Ocean, And Everything In Between, a new script by San Francisco-based playwright Michael P. Premsrirat, as part of the New Work Now festival. "The call to direct at the Public literally came out of the blue," says Neulander, "Apparently, they had heard that I was good with Ruth Margraff's work and this play is similar in style. The opportunity is truly a dream come true for me. I can't wait to go up." The reading of The Clouds, The Ocean, And Everything In Between will be held on Sunday, May 13, at the Public Theater.
Salvage Vanguard Theater will be back in action in Austin in June with Return of the Intergalactic Nemesis, the sequel to the popular radio serial The Intergalactic Nemesis, featuring foley art by Buzz Moran and music by Golden Arm Trio. Return of the Intergalactic Nemesis will run two nights only: Friday June 8 and Saturday June 9 at Ducloux Hall, on Barton Springs Road.
