Salvage Vanguard Theater Tours Two Shows

Austin, TX--Salvage Vanguard Theater is touring two productions this summer and fall: Dan Dietz' Dirigible is heading to the New York International Fringe Festival in August and Mac Wellman's Terminal Hip is playing in Los Angeles in November. Both shows will have limited engagements in Austin before they tour.

Hailed by the Austin American-Statesman as a "smart, thought-provoking, and adroit production," Dan Dietz' Dirigible won the 1999 Austin Critics Table Award for Best New Play. Jason Neulander, the show's director, was nominated for Best Director of a Comedy for his work on the production. A truly postmodern show, Dirigible is Dr. Aaron Treadwell's lecture on the sabotage of the Hindenburg--interspersed with a 70s sit-com, film noir, and a famous pointillist painting. The play will tour to the New York International Fringe Festival with its original cast. Award-winning actress Stephanie Swenson returns as Laura Treadwell, Corey Gagne plays the Saboteur, and Michael Kranes revives his role as Dr. Aaron Treadwell. Dirigible will play in New York August 16 - 23.Dirigible will play at The Hideout in Austin (716 Congress) for a benefit performance ONE NIGHT ONLY, Monday August 14 at 8 PM. Tickets for the show and catered reception are $20. For information, call 474-SVT-6.

Terminal Hip was Austin's professional introduction to the work of veteran playwright Mac Wellman. Of the April 2000 production, the Austin Chronicle said: "It is hard to imagine a better, more stimulating version of the Mac Wellman script than this Salvage Vanguard Theater production, created by [performer Dan] Dietz and director Jason Neulander." The show was nominated for the 2000 Austin Critics Table Awards for Best Production of a Comedy, Best Director of a Comedy, and Best Actor in a Comedy. Terminal Hip star Dan Dietz won the Best Actor award and will revive his role for the tour. Jason Neulander (who was nominated for the 2000 Austin Critics Table Awards for Best Director of a Comedy, Best Director of a Drama, and Best Director of a Musical) directs. Salvage Vanguard's production of Terminal Hip will play at the Ivy Substation in Culver City November 16 - 18 as part of a dual presentation of the play by Los Angeles-based Bottom's Dream. Before it tours, Terminal Hip will play in Austin for a benefit presentation TWO NIGHTS ONLY at the Hideout, (716 Congress), Thursday and Friday, November 9 and 10, at 8 PM. Tickets for the shows and catered receptions are $20. For information, call 474-SVT-6.

Salvage Vanguard Theater's next production, The American Demons, opens in Austin September 15.
