DEFT : Emerging Painters from St. Edward's University

These young artists, on the cusp of their emergence, are bursting with imagination, intuition, and ingenuity. Six peers (recent graduates of the St. Edward's University Art Department) bring their fresh and varied painting styles out of the classroom and into the contemporary art world for the first time. Still filled with hope and promise despite the current economic situation they are graduating into, these individuals have been working within the mystery that is the tiny art department in Austin's only Catholic university. The artists of DEFT have been working together side-by-side in the painting studio for the past year, but have each created very different work. Abstract, surrealist, and representational paintings among others help to make up the diverse and eclectic exhibition. These individuals present personal narratives, intensive studies, moments of inspired creation, reflection, invention, and personification. The assorted paintings have been produced primarily in oil and acrylic and reach out to audiences both broad and narrow. The artists of DEFT are excited to share their unique vision and style with the Austin artistic community for the first time.
